Pumps and Circulating System (for entry level workers), English

Mud Pumps and Circulating System

in Workover / Completion Operations

The Circulating System is one of major components of workover equipment. Its many purposes are similar to the purposes of the Mud System.

These jobs must be done on all wells by the Circulating System:

·         Control subsurface pressures

·         Remove cuttings from the hole while milling or drilling

 Fluid circulation should perform these beneficial functions:

·         Clean, cool and lubricate the bit (mill) while drilling or milling;

·         Protect pay-zones from possible damage;

·         Circulate the influx out;

·         Help buoy the weight of pipe.

Safety Practices (for training of entry level workers), English

More than 90% of all accidents are avoidable. They are caused by human errors rather than by mechanical failure. Safety, therefore, is the responsibility of every one having anything to do with the drilling and workover of the well. Everyone benefits when accidents are prevented.

Everyone loses from an accident. Injuries result in pain and suffering and may leave someone disabled for life. Even minor injuries may cause loss of time from work and lost pay. Insurance benefits are helpful, but compensation payments can not restore a life, hand, eye, or leg. Damaged machinery and equipment can usually be repaired but almost always at considerable cost, particularly if downtime is taken into account. Blowouts and fires cause losses of life and equipment and waste oil and gas from underground reservoirs. An expensive well may be lost due to the oversight or the incompetence of one man.

Well Control in C,R&W Operations (guidelines for rig workers), English

Oil and gas well control procedures for C, R,& W operations are significantly different than those used when drilling. Though basic pressure considerations are the same, implementation methods vary greatly due to well conditions, which are often unique to individual wells. These conditions include the type of completion, formation pressures exposed to the wellbore, and the reasons for performing the workover.

Routine C,R,& W operations often require the implementation of various well control procedures. The most common are 1) killing a producing well and 2) controlling kicks, which occur during a workover. An understanding of the differences between these two operations and the effect of routine operations on well control is essential for the workover supervisor.

 In this section, specific attention will be paid to pressure and its effect on well control, causes of kicks and considerations, which affect selection of proper kill procedures.
